The Hot Seat

Don’t waste a minute not being happy.

If one window closes, run to the next window- or break down a door.
- Brooke Shields

And if you’re lucky, you’ll come across one of these lovely window seats in the process.

What better way to capitalize on space in an irregularly shaped room or home with limited square footage?

Carve out your own extra special nook with a simple upholstered bench and plenty of fun throw pillows! Don’t forget to add a light source, so that you can actually see your book. Swing arm lights, standing lamps and sconces work particularly well in these intimate areas.

Spring for storage containers underneath the seating area for a stylish organization solution, perfect for families with children, women with bursting closets and bachelors with enough sports equipment to open their own Dick’s franchise.

Creating your window seat is the easy part. Try getting out of the nook, once you have a cozy spot all your own.

What, Jackson? You want to know what’s for dinner? Yea..about that…

Puppy Love

 Job + Apartment + Boyfriend + Free Time – Hobby = Puppy!

I’ve wanted to adopt/rescue/buy/kidnap/find a dog for the past four years. My parents, horrified by the idea, always told me I didn’t have the time to actually care for a puppy. That it would severely limit my lifestyle. They reminded me that I would have to drastically cut back on the dinner dates, my lamp addiction and random trips to see Jackson in the city.

So I backed down.

And not because I value the material aspects in life too much to sacrifice a new pair of Jack Rogers for a furry best friend, but sometimes it just makes more sense to pick your battles.

Then, in March 2011, I crafted The Puppy Plan:

1) Become I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T

2) Fine tune my search to find a great medium-sized pup breed

3) Design puppy nook in home complete with mini lamp

4) Convince Jack/Mom and Dad how much We/I need(ed) a little beagle in our lives, so that Peach(I’ve probably spent too much time thinking about this) would be welcomed into the family with open arms.

I figured I could get Jackson to come around eventually, though he initially refused to entertain the idea. (Allie, We don’t have a backyard! Who would let her out at lunch? What if we wanted to go on a weekend holiday?) Similarly, my parents were still not on board but I was going to prove them wrong, once and for all!

THEN WE MOVED INTO AN ABSOLUTELY NO-PET BUILDING.

Yes, it’s on a tree-lined, safe and picturesque street. No, I cannot even adopt a goldfish until 2013.

So I got a blue and white porcelain china garden seat instead:

“But Allie, it looks like a keg!”- Mom,

It’s no puppy, but I’m excited to accessorize our apartment with my new little stool! I’ve been a fan of them for ages, before they blew up the decorating world/blogosphere. Usually such a pedantic (and pricey) decor-fad turns me off. However, I really couldn’t resist this time around. It is an investment but as an avid purveyor of blue and white china, it will always fit in with my home.

Plus, it’s just the perfect size to hold the mini-lamp I’m planning for (the future) Peach’s doggie area.

I can dream, can’t I?
